Crown lifting removes the lowest branches so there is more clearance beneath the canopy. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a large tree easier to live with: cars and vans can get onto the drive, you can mow under it, and low sun reaches the house again.
We specify lifts as a height above ground — typically 2.5 metres over lawns and footpaths and 5.2 metres over roads — and cut back to the trunk or to a suitable side branch, never leaving stubs.
Getting the Height Right
Lifting too high in one go can leave a tree top-heavy and remove a large share of its leaf area. On mature trees we prefer to take out smaller secondary branches first, and only remove a main lower limb when there’s a good reason.
Crown lifting is often combined with crown thinning or deadwooding on the same visit, which keeps costs down.

Crown Lifting: Common Questions
Is crown lifting bad for the tree?
Not when done properly. Removing a few lower branches has little effect on a healthy tree. Problems come from removing too much at once or cutting large limbs flush to the trunk.
The council says my tree overhangs the pavement — can you help?
Yes. Highway authorities can require overhanging vegetation to be cut back. We’ll lift the crown to the clearance they ask for and clear away all the arisings.
